MA’s Alexa Fegley wins D-11 2A diving title
Moravian Academy sophomore Alexa Fegley was crowned District XI Class 2A diving champion at the District XI Diving Championships this past Saturday at Emmaus High School.
“I’m very proud of myself,” Fegley said. “I was very nervous, but I knew I had done everything I could do and everything I needed to do, but the nerves still were there.”
Fegley singled out her front 1.5 and her inward dive as being strong dives for her on Saturday.
“I really like those. They’re pretty easy for me,” she said.
Fegley maintained first place throughout the 11-dive meet, but after the first five dives, she was dissatisfied with her overall point total at the time.
“I wasn’t exactly at the score I wanted to be, but I kind of put my mind to it and got the score up to where I wanted it to be,” said Fegley.
Her final score was 332.90.
In addition, Fegley was uncertain about a first place finish until the very last dive.
“I was ahead by one point right before I did my final dive, so at that moment, I knew whatever I did on that dive...I knew if I overthought it, I would not do what I was able to,” she said.
Fegley, a fairly new diver, had not competed in the EPC Diving Championship meets because Moravian Academy is in the Colonial League, but she practices at Liberty with Bethlehem Catholic’s Anna Petke who won the silver medal in Class 2A.
“We had a great day today,” said Coach Emily Kocis. “They are an absolute joy to work with, and it’s great that they’re friends. Having them both practicing at Liberty on the same team gave them that competition both of them needed throughout the season.”
Fegley, who also practices at Emmaus Aquatic Club, will move on to compete at the PIAA State Diving Championships on March 13 at Bucknell University.
“I like diving, so I’m looking forward to more practices,” Fegley said.
