Becahi advances 11 to Northeast Regionals

It was one of Evan Gleason’s finest moments of his wrestling career and a night he won’t forget. Gleason stole the show at last week’s District 11 3A tournament when he pinned Nazareth’s Dashawn Farber in 2:33 to mark one of the biggest surprises of the night.

His championship medal was one of three that the Golden Hawks collected on the night, as Tyler Kasak (106) and Kenny Herrmann (132) brought home titles as well, en route to Becahi taking home a second-place finish with 243.5 points.

The Hawks advanced 11 wrestlers in total to this weekend’s Northeast Regional 3A tournament, where they’ll look to challenge district champion Nazareth in the team standings again.

Gleason, a junior, will probably get another crack at Farber too and while pinning him two weeks in a row isn’t likely, he’ll be confident heading into the tournament.

“It was so nice to get a win like that and with all the extra work we put in, it was great,” said Gleason. “I know anyone can be beaten and it just fell into place. This is a big confidence booster and hopefully I can keep this moving forward into next week and at states.”

Herrmann faced a 4-0 deficit to Stroudsburg’s Patrick Noonan heading into the third period, but scored two takedowns in the final frame before scoring the winning takedown in overtime to escape with his first district gold in his senior campaign.

“I tweaked my groin early in the match in that first scramble and it hurt, but I didn’t want to take injury time,” said Herrmann. “Once I stretched my groin out, I just told myself that I had to win this match. I worked as much as I could this offseason to get the gold around my neck in March, but it’s also really nice to win my first district gold.”

Kasak kicked off his first run at districts with a bang, knocking off Freedom’s CJ Horvath by a 4-0 decision.

The Becahi freshman came into the tournament as the 16th-seed after sitting out most of the season with an injury, but proved his pedigree as one of the state’s top-ranked wrestlers.

“Honestly, I feel I could have done better,” said Kasak. “I had confidence in myself and the coaches that I could have won. If I was the top-seed or the last-seed, I was coming in with the same mentality. I feel like I’m in my best shape and I’m just going to get ready for regionals now.”

The Hawks had six finalists in total, but Matt Lackman (152), Matt Mayer (120) and Cole Handlovic (145) each fell in the championship round.

Lackman started the night off taking on Nazareth’s Nate Stefanik, but fell by a 6-4 decision. Mayer got bit by another Blue Eagle following Andrew Smith’s 7-6 decision, while Handlovic lost in the night final and marquee bout against Northampton’s Jagger Condomitti 7-3.

Other Hawks to place included: Andrew Harmon (126, fourth); Dante Frinzi (113, third); Jemir Jiminez (160, third); Justus Bozzi (195, fifth); Luke Thomas (170, fifth).
