LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Diaz, Kern make regionals

The Parkland wrestling squad took 10th place last weekend at the District 11 Class 3A tournament at the Liberty High School Memorial Gym.

The Trojans finished with 67 points. The Nazareth Blue Eagles took the team title with 291.5 points.

Two wresters in particular - Bryan Diaz at 132 pounds and Lucas Kern at 145 pounds - performed well against the district’s best.

Kern beat Blue Mountain’s Daniel Farrell 4-3 in the fifth place round. Diaz had a strong tournament, but could not handle Whitehall’s Xavier Arner, losing a 3-2 decision in the fifth place round.

Before the match, Diaz said he hoped to “be aggressive and score early and get out in front.” With success in the district tournament, Diaz said it was a “great opportunity” to test where he was at as a wrestler.

Coach Jon Trenge described Diaz as “a great wrestler, student, and person. He works hard and follows our advice. He is coachable and his hard work is paying off. I am happy to see him finding success.”

For his part, Diaz said Trenge has “kept him focused” on becoming a better wrestler.

Diaz made it to the championship semifinals, but was pinned in 1:51 by Stroudsburg’s Patrick Noonan. Kern also had a good weekend, although he was pinned by Nazareth’s Jake Dressler at the 5:38 mark in the championship quarterfinal round.
