Gas leak forces evacuation

Some Northampton Borough residents were evacuated from their homes Feb. 22 after a reported gas leak in the area.

According to Northampton County emergency personnel, a report was made about 7:30 p.m. of a strong odor of gas in the 2100 block of Washington Avenue.

Residents of more than a dozen homes were evacuated. Northampton Fire Department opened its doors to them, providing some warmth while they waited for updates.

UGI Utilities cut service to more than 50 homes. Electricity was also turned off.

The investigation and work to remedy the situation continued Feb. 23. Heavy equipment remained in the area, after taking out a considerable amount of asphalt and digging a trench along the sidewalk.

Northampton Fire Department officials reported via Facebook that residents were allowed back into their homes 4 a.m. Feb. 23.

Gas and electricity services have been restored.

No injuries were reported while emergency personnel worked in the area.
