Freedom wrestling coach Dante Terenzio hopes his team can put everything together this weekend to kick start the individual postseason.
The Patriots will look to extend their postseason run for another three weeks heading into Hershey, but this weekend’s District 11 3A tournament is step one in the process.
Terenzio is also confident that his team can make some noise.
“I think, if our guys wrestle to their potential, we can have a top five finish,” said Terenzio. “That’s the goal as a team. Obviously, the more important goal is to push as many individuals through to regionals as possible.”
Freedom returns three medalists from last year in Luis Vargas (fifth), Connor Huber (fifth) and Max Marrero (third) and looks to punch those three wrestlers ahead to regionals.
CJ Horvath (106) and Vargas (120) are two of Terenzio’s favorites to make a run to the finals this weekend, but also thinks Huber (126) and Marrero (195) can make valiant pushes toward Saturday’s spotlight round as well.
“CJ Horvath and Luis Vargas probably have the best shot at getting to the finals and competing for a title,” said Terenzio. “I think guys like Connor Huber and Max Marrero are battle-tested at these bigger tournaments and can challenge for a title as well.”
Other wrestlers looking to advance include Reinaldo Lebron (138), Mikey Gomes (145), Shane Storm (152), Chris Juardo (160), Pat Carrillo (170) and Matt Bogardo (220).
“Our expectation is to have around five regional qualifiers,” Terenzio said. “We’re hoping to see some other guys put together a solid tournament and sneak through to regionals too.”
