Liberty falls to Allen
Liberty boys’ basketball coach Chad Landis said the Hurricanes had a great run but getting back to business for a district run is at the top of the list after their 64-42 loss to William Allen in the East Penn Conference final last Thursday night at the PPL Center in Allentown.
“I don’t know exactly what it was,” Landis said of the Hurricanes’ shortfall. “It was one of those nights.”
Allen dominated the first quarter and led 21-12 before scoring six straight points to start the second quarter when Landis called a timeout at 4:51.
“It got us in a scramble mode and that didn’t work out too well for us,” he said.
After Hurricane guard Ish Gonzalez hit a three pointer to open the third quarter, the Canaries came roaring back with consecutive scores by A’Quele Adderley, Nathan Ellis, and Quinton Stewart.
“It started with our defense that wasn’t up to the task and then our offense kind of fumbled as well,” said Landis. “It felt like every time...We came out of the half and we got four or five chances to score and we just couldn’t do it. And then they made us press on defense, and that’s what Allen wants. They want you pressing, and they’re scoring.”
Liberty’s Rahmad Ali ended the third quarter with a three pointer, but Quinton Stewart’s slam dunk to open the fourth quarter started another Canary run that resulted in nine straight points, and after Antonio Montgomery sank a free throw for the Hurricanes, Allen tallied eight more points.
Somehow, the Hurricanes need to regroup in time for district playoffs which begin this week.
“That’s going to be the challenge and that’s what we’ll talk about right now and we’ll talk about it again when we get together at practice,” Landis said. “It was a great run for us, and we’ve got to be able to do that, get back to business.”
