Hurricanes to be tested

Liberty’s young wrestling team will be put to the test this weekend when the District 11 3A tournament gets underway at their home gymnasium.

For head coach Brandon Hall, this season has been a learning experience, but it’s also one where his team has grown, hopefully into a team that can turn heads at Memorial Gymnasium.

“We certainly have several guys who feel they are ready for post season competition and can advance to next week’s regional tournament,” said Hall. “As a team, we like to obviously place as high as possible. Our goal is to place top five as a team and advance half the team to regionals. Given how young our team is, we know these are lofty goals but also know what’s possible for ourselves.”

The Hurricanes will feature 14 wrestlers this weekend starting with Connor Werner (106); Javien Deleon (113); Ansar Niazi (120); Ryan Santiago (126); O’Ryan Reid (132); Chandler Drew (138); Jason Rezac (145); Jackson Marcantonio (152); Christian Reid (160); John Vasquez (170); Kevin Hennessy (182); Dustin Tocci (195); Zaire Mitchell (220) and Lance Priestas (285).

Liberty returns three medalists from last year in Werner (third, 106), Rezac (fourth, 145) and Hennessy (third, 182).

With those wrestlers entering the tournament as Liberty’s top guns, they also come into tough weight classes.

“Rezac is in a tough spot with Jagger Condomitti (Northampton) and Cole Handlovic (Bethlehem Catholic) as the top two seeds at his weight,” Hall said. “Connor’s weight is loaded. Maybe DeLeon and Hennessy have the best shot at making the finals and winning a district title.”
