Becahi looking for gold

Bethlehem Catholic will be in the hunt for the District 11 3A team title this weekend, as the individual wrestling postseason gets underway this weekend at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Head coach Jeff Karam is hopeful that his team can finish the season strong, following a third-place team finish at the PIAA dual meet tournament in Hershey.

“We still haven’t figured out the entire lineup for this weekend,” said Karam as of last weekend. “We’re going to try and get as many guys through to regionals as possible.”

Karam had roughly nine weights set heading into this weekend, which included Tyler Kasak or Cael McIntyre (106); Dante Frinzi (113); Matt Mayer (120); Kenny Herrmann (132); Evan Gleason (138); Cole Handlovic (145); Matt Lackman (152); Jamir Jiminez (160) and Justus Bozzi (182 or 195).

The Hawks return five district medalists from last year, including Frinzi (second), Mayer (fourth), Handlovic (first) and Herrmann (second), Lackman (fourth).

Handlovic and Herrmann should be favorites to reach the finals, while Kasak or McIntyre will also be favored to make a finals run. Frinzi would like to use his silver medal from last year as motivation to get gold this weekend too.

“Hopefully we get nine or ten guys through to regionals as a realistic goal,” Karam said. “As a team, I think we definitely have a good shot for top three. I think we can improve our placement as a team through regionals and states though.”

Wrestling gets underway Friday at 4 p.m. with the preliminary round, followed by the quarterfinals set for 6 p.m. Saturday’s semifinals will go off at 10:30am with consolation finals taking place at 4 p.m.

Finals for 3A and 2A (on two mats) will both be at Memorial Gymnasium, as they are scheduled for a 5:45pm start.
