Weaversville hospital coming down

The former state hospital on Weaversville Road, near the back entrance of East Allen Township’s Bicentennial Park, is being demolished.

The old institution with a gloomy history was ceded to the township and will now be a part of the park.

The township is also working to remove the stone farmhouse located on the property. The floors in the stone building are rotted. Officials are concerned someone might break in and fall through the floor.

“While we were taking down the hospital building, people were breaking in just to see what was happening,” township Manager Brent Green said.

The hospital has a contaminated oil tank that needs to be removed, along with a few other environmental hazards.

Township supervisors gave the go-ahead to remove the farmhouse at its last meeting.
