‘New look at landmark’
The first group of local preservationists gathered for a special organizational meeting Jan. 13 at Catasauqua Municipal Complex.
Although the George Taylor House, located at Lehigh and Poplar streets, is considered an asset to the borough, it has fallen into some disrepair.
To alleviate some confusion and allow for preservationists to restore the borough’s national landmark, Catasauqua Borough Solicitor Jeffrey Dimmich prepared documentation that allowed preservationists to act as a not-for-profit entity. Restoring this once-treasured landmark will be a labor-intensive effort requiring plenty of support from the local community - residents and businesses alike - as well as outside groups interested in preserving this unique American heritage.
Dimmich is also preparing agreements that outline operating parameters for the group.
“As part of our new look at this landmark, I want to congratulate the people who have stepped forward to work with the borough in this effort and the new look in the borough’s recreation committee,” Mayor Barbara Schlegel said.
The officers and board for the George Taylor House are Richard Guth, president; Robert Martin, vice president; Jason Kern, treasurer; and Sheila Martin, secretary. Board members at-large are Dorothy Everly, Christine Roca and Judy Burton.
The first task assigned to the new group is to determine the value of assets in the George Taylor House. Once completed, the new asset list will be available to the public and kept digitally.
There will be an effort to recruit preservationists and enthusiasts in Catasauqua and in the Lehigh Valley.
“Right now, we have few people from Catasauqua who have shown any interest in restoring this landmark, so we have our work cut out for us,” Schlegel said. “Annette Pompa, with Taylor House Brewing (Company), is the first resident to step forward.”
The first event of the season will be held at the George Taylor House April 25. The event is co-sponsored with Taylor House Brewing Company, 76 Lehigh St. The family day festivities will honor women in the brewing industry. Organizers promise it will be a unique event.
