Freedom’s girls’ basketball team shut out Dieruff in the first quarter of the Patriots’ 62-19 victory over the Huskies last Friday at Freedom.
The Lady Pates took a 23-0 lead after one quarter of play, including 11 points by senior Jennifer Kokolus.
The Huskies called two timeouts in the first quarter to no avail.
Kokolus opened the second quarter with four straight points, and Dieruff got their first two on a layup by Jadalyn Vrena at 5:05.
Freedom guard Corrin Gill hit two three pointers in the same quarter.
“Coach [Dean Reiman] wanted us to be more offensive-minded because a lot of times we’re pass only and we make the extra pass too many times, so he wanted us to start putting up the shots that are wide open rather than passing them up,” Gill said.
Gill had three more threes in the second half.
“We don’t want to hold ourselves back. We focus a lot on defense also. We’re always preparing for the future and preparing for playoffs as we get deeper into the season,” she said.
This Friday, Freedom will take on Liberty in a girl-boy doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Liberty.
