Area coaches react to Bryant’s sudden death

The death of Kobe Bryant this week has touched many people across the world and Bethlehem’s local boys’ basketball teams felt the sting of the icon’s death across their programs as well this week.

Here’s what the head coaches from Liberty, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic had to weigh in on the Laker legends passing:

“I was very sad to hear of the tragic death of Kobe. I grew up with him, we were the same age, graduated from high school the same year. I can remember hearing about him as a high school player. Then following his career as a pro was awesome. His work ethic and dedication to basketball was second to none.” - Liberty head coach Chad Landis

“The news of Kobe Bryant is a tragedy, and it breaks my heart to see someone so young and full of life have it taken away from him. He was a great player, but a player like that does not rest, does not stop and smell the roses. He worked on his craft to the point of obsession, so when it was finally his time to sit back and enjoy life and what he has accomplished, it was all taken away from him.

“I couldn’t help but to look at my own life and make sure in the midst of this playoff run, I am not forgetting to enjoy it and enjoy my seniors who I love so much. The team is heartbroken - they grew up watching him play and wanting to be like him. It is a good time for all of us to make sure we keep high school basketball in perspective and enjoy the time we have together as a team.” - Freedom head coach Joe Stellato

“I think, like all of us, hearing the news of Kobe was shocking. It is emotional when a public figure passes away in sudden fashion. He was polarizing to our sport and certainly a major player in the minds of all our youth. Helping the guys process their grief and their emotions takes time and honest conversation.” - Bethlehem Catholic head coach Scott McClary
