Residents and officials braved below-freezing but sunny weather to march down Broadway in South Bethlehem and up the hill on Carlton Avenue to the small park dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Men, women and children marched up the hill singing, “We Shall Overcome,” the hymn of the Civil Rights Movement.

Led by Dr. Martin Luther King Civil Rights Movement President Frankie West, who organized the event, the marchers listened to several speakers who competed with the noon bells of the Holy Ghost Church next to the park.

West, who was flanked by Pa. State Representative Steve Samuelson and Northampton County Councilman Kerry Myers, led the procession.

Eleven-year old sixth-grader Jayla Davis had the honor of preceding the procession, solemnly carrying a wreath.

Pastor Zellaree Williams of Holy Faith Pentecostal Church offered a prayer at the start of the ceremony at the park.
