The Emmaus wrestling program thrived during the new year’s first two weeks.

On Jan. 3, the Green Hornets dominated East Stroudsburg South, 60-12. The victory showcased the team’s depth.

“The match against East Stroudsburg was a total team effort,” said Hornet head coach Thad Smith. “Every wrestler did their job to help the team win. Overall, I was very pleased with the performance and hope this sets up a successful run through the second half of the season.”

Five nights later, the Green Hornets shutout William Allen, 81-0. The next night, the Green Machine took care of Allentown’s other high school, Dieruff, with equal ruthlessness in a 71-9 victory.

Two young men who are coming up through the ranks and producing are freshman Marco Albanese and sophomore Nick Velde.

Albanese, wrestling at 106, pinned Allen’s Tommy Silberman in 2:51. Twenty-four hours later, he pinned Dieruff’s Alex Villanueva in 1:26.

“Marco has come up through the program and has a very good work ethic,” said his coach. “Everything he gets, he has earned through hard work. Marco is very coachable and is willing to listen to the coaches to make himself better.”

Velde, who wrestles in the 132-pound weight class, pinned the Canaries’ Rachelly Montas in just 19 seconds. One night later, he did same thing to the Huskies’ Grimaldi Gonzalez in only 28 seconds.

“Nick is a very coachable wrestler who just wants to get better,” said Smith. “He is a leader in the room, and works extremely hard to get better. His attitude is great and he wants to wrestle the best to see where he is at.”

Last weekend, the Green Hornets participated in the 2020 Dallastown Duals defeating Cocalico 45-19 in the opening round. However, that was the Hornets’ last team victory at the event.

Emmaus lost its semifinal match against the host school, 48-32.Later, they could not handle Central Mountain in the third place round, losing 46-27.
