Hawks Medina reaches 1,000 points

Bethlehem Catholic guard Taliyah Medina made a packed Becahi gymnasium wait for it, and with just 1:35 remaining in the Hawks’ game against Nazareth, the Becahi senior scored the 1,000th point of her high school career last Friday night.

“It was very exciting and such a great moment to share with my family here watching, and it being at home on Youth Night, just the atmosphere was perfect,” said Medina. “When I hugged my dad (Becahi girls basketball coach Jose Medina) it was a really good feeling, and being able to kind of make history is so great.”

Needing 21 points to reach 1,000, Medina scored her twentieth point of the game, number 999, midway through the third quarter. Afterward, the crowd was on the edge of their seats, some standing, every time Medina had the ball.

“My mom made a big board and she was counting down numbers, but a little fun fact, I count my points in my head during the game, so I knew,” Medina said. “It was so frustrating because when I was getting fouled they weren’t calling anything, so I really had to earn those last two points.”

Medina scored after rebounding a missed three pointer by teammate Jaleesa Lanier. The Becahi bench cleared, the band played, and Medina was presented with a plaque.

“My dad was telling me to let the game come to me because I was forcing it a little bit because I wanted to get that one point. It was going to come,” said Medina. “My teammates were encouraging me and when I finally got it, it was such a relief.”
