Northampton Borough Council is considering joining several other local municipalities in a multimunicipal comprehensive plan.
The vote to join could come as soon as council’s Feb. 6 meeting.
Tracy Oscavich, director of development with the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission, and East Allen Township Manager Brent Green went before council at the Jan. 6 meeting, outlining the objectives of such a collaboration.
The River Central Comprehensive Plan, which began as an inter-borough planning program for Catasauqua and North Catasauqua, has since expanded, with the help of LVPC, to include Hanover Township (Lehigh County), East Allen Township and now possibly Northampton Borough as well.
Originally organized with the intention of coordinating the development of parks and public spaces across multiple municipalities, parties involved decided a joint comprehensive plan would better allow them to address broader regional issues, such as truck traffic, fire cooperation agreements, road grants and more.
“The committee, under the guidance of the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission, intends to address items of mutual concern to the involved communities,” borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said.
Anthony Pristash, borough councilman, and Victor Rodite, community planner, have already represented the borough at River Central Steering Committee sessions.
With only five of the eight council members present, Brobst said it is only fair to defer the vote until all council members can be briefed. Pristash put a vote on the floor, which passed unanimously, to have a draft resolution prepared for the Feb. 6 meeting.
