LHS girls top Quakertown
Liberty’s patience along with its quickness led to a 59-30 victory over Quakertown on Saturday at Liberty.
“The first quarter we didn’t shoot the ball well at all. We were getting shots we wanted, but we couldn’t make a thing, and finally in the second quarter we got some to drop,” said Liberty coach Andy Wescoe. “I think our pressure got to them where we got some steals and some transition buckets in the second quarter and then Morgan Bokan came in...”
Bokan came off the bench to hit a three pointer with 1:25 left before halftime. That, along with contributions from the rest of the Hurricanes, led to a 30-11 lead at the break.
“Today, we really stayed with it, fought through it, and eventually they started falling in. It really picked up the tempo of the game too,” said Bokan, who also had a layup off a steal and back-to-back threes.
“A big part of our game is playing it into the interior and throwing it back outside. We try to get a lot of looks in and out, so feeding the post on breaks or pulling the defense out really gets our momentum going.”
As for Liberty’s defense, Coach Wescoe stressed team rebounding.
“It was a point of emphasis going into the game,” he said. “Our last two games I felt we were dominated on the boards, and we really had to get back to boxing out and being first to the ball. Against a bigger team, we did rebound the ball pretty effectively.”
Liberty guard Jessica Farrell had her share of steals and hit a three in the game, along with three consecutive buckets in the third quarter.
“I just put it up quick instead of my usual shot fake and go,” said Farrell.
Quakertown went on a small run in the fourth quarter, but the Hurricanes shut them down after a timeout and a putback by Erin Eisenhart.
Farrell ended the game with an intercepted pass and scored on a layup.
“Coach always tells us to deny the ball, so when we’re playing defense...just stay low and get a quick steal,” Farrell said.
