Borough gains two new Eagle Scouts
Northampton residents Clifton Bastow and Michael A. Jamicky, with Boy Scout Troop 383, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held Dec. 1, 2019, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Whitehall.
They are the sons of David and Theresa Bastow and Melissa and Mike Jamicky, respectively.
Both Scouts have served as senior patrol leader, quartermaster and patrol leader.
An integral part of becoming an Eagle Scout is to perform a service project for the community.
Bastow’s project was to repair and replace the 65 tree identification posts and nameplates on the west side of Louise Moore Park, Bethlehem Township.
He raised funds to procure wood, custom nameplates, security screws, wood stain and other supplies. He manufactured new posts and had the nameplates professionally made by a local sign company.
He worked with a professor from Penn State University to identify the 65 tree specimens and with volunteers and park representatives to install the new identification posts or repair the ones not replaced.
As a result of this initiative, the park leadership will work to get the park registered as a national arboretum, given the quality, health, age and variety of trees at the park.
Jamicky’s project was to dig out and landscape a new electronic sign and flagpole at Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department, 3530 Howertown Road.
Jamicky has been a volunteer firefighter for the last year, following in the footsteps of his father, who has been a volunteer firefighter for 34 years.
After securing the site, Jamicky dug out and around electric wires to lay stone, weed protector and top soil to the area. He had to level everything and added decorative stones and plants to the area.
He paid for the project out of his own pocket through a part-time job as well as securing some materials from the township. This saved the fire department both time and money and made the area useful and beautiful.
Schnecksville resident Noah Mattson, also of Troop 383, earned Eagle Scout at the event as well.
Only two out of every 100 Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle.
