Angelo “Augie” Angelino Augustino, City police officer; deputy sheriff

Angelo “Augie” Angelino Augustino, 89, died Jan. 3, 2020. Born and raised in Welland, Ontario, Canada, he was a son of Armando and Maria (LoStrocco) Augustino. He was the husband of the late Dolores (Rendish) Augustino for 45 years and of Phyllis Sinko for nine years.

He was an U.S. Army medic and trained as a helicopter pilot from 1953 to 1956. He was sworn in as a U.S. citizen while stationed in Poitiers, France, in 1954, and was then transferred to Germany.

He was an auto mechanic and in 1963 became a city of Bethlehem police officer, and retired as a sergeant after 28 years. He received many citations and awards. He then was a Northampton County Deputy Sheriff for 10 years until he retired from that position.

He was a past president, vice president, secretary/treasurer and delegate of the Fraternal Order of Police Star Lodge #20, and was a member of the pension board of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of the Jefferson Democratic Club and of the Bethlehem Volunteer Fireman’s Home Association.

He was the driving force behind the creation of the memorial for fellow fallen police officer Phillip Fahy. He is survived by three sons, Ronnie and his wife Cuyler, John (Ritchie) and his wife Theodora; and Angelo and Liz Johnson; two daughters, Kathleen Long and her husband Tom and Maria Bentzoni and her husband Cory; six grandchildren, Reid and Luke Augustino, Sarah Bondoc and Sean Augustino and Jesse and Shane Long; three great-grandsons, Bohdi, Grady and Everett; a sister, Teresa; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded by five siblings, Frank, Joseph, Louise, Albert and Tony.
