Four Hornets place at BHWC
The Emmaus wresting program dished out a few lumps and took a few as well during the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic, held Dec. 28-29 at Liberty High School.
Four Green Hornets - Geovanni Lainez at 113, Evan Camire wrestling at 126, 138-pounder Kordell Waiters and Cody Lafaver in the 220-pound category - claimed first-round victories. Marco Albanese at 106, Caden Wright at 182, James Santichen at 285 along with Waiters were victorious in the tournament’s second round.
Wright and Santichen continued their winning ways through the quarterfinals, before experiencing defeat in the semifinals. Both wrestlers won consolation matches and competed in third-place matches before taking fourth overall in their weight class.
Wright took fourth place after forfeiting due to injury in his place match. Santichen was pinned in the heavyweight third-place bout.
Meanwhile Albanese and Waiters fell in the quarterfinals, although both had solid tournaments. In the consolation round, Albanese secured a major decision win and Waiters was pinned.
“I had a tough match in the quarterfinals and it didn’t come out in my favor,” said Waiters. “In the blood-round match I was up 11-5 and I got caught head locked and pinned. That same kid that caught me happened to wrestle back for fourth place.”
Waiters said second-year coach Thad Smith keeps him mentally focused.
“He’s been there for me emotionally,” Waiters said when asked about his coaching style. “He also makes sure that I have my head in the right place before I go out there on the mat more than physically teaching me wrestling.”
Waiters, who has shown steady improvement during his Green Hornet wrestling career, says he enjoys his mat battles.
“I love to compete, love to go after it,” he said when asked why he wrestles. “The social aspect of it with my teammates is always a good time.”
Eventually Albanese secured a seventh-place finish with an 11-2 major decision over Quakertown’s Zach Borzio.
Jared Groller finished eight at 170. After losing his first-round bout to Bryce Molinaro of Hazleton, Groller won three straight matches and wrestled back to the seventh-place match where he met Molinaro again.
Overall the Green Hornets finished 16th out of 31 schools in the tournament with 80 points.
