Catasauqua’s wrestling team continues its slow assault toward a potential successful postseason.

The Rough Riders took third place overall from a field of eight team at the recent Zephyr Duals at Whitehall High School.

It marked the third impressive tournament showing for the Roughies, who finished third at their own tournament and fourth at the Jim Thorpe tournament. They also have a 2-1 record in dual meets this season.

Head coach Joe Russo has watched his club grow throughout the year.

“We needed a little more than we gave, but there was some individual progress,” said Russo about the Whitehall tournament. “We are now preparing for the next three weeks of dual meets.”

At the Whitehall tournament, sophomore Jaryn Hartranft notched his second title in two weeks at 113 pounds. His record remains unblemished with a 12-0 mark.

Junior Jake Nye (7-4) took second place at 106 pounds, and fellow junior Austin Brett (10-5) also was a runner-up at 128 pounds.

“Jaryn Hartranft just continues to roll,” said Russo. “Jake Nye has a good second-place finish, and Austin Brett has been in battles the last two tournaments and he fought his way to second (at Whitehall).”

Senior heavyweight Lavonte Bouie (7-5) and fellow 222-pound senior Zach Scheirer (8-5) also took second and freshman Gavin Fehr (10-5) and senior Adam Reinhart (10-4) both finished third. Sophomore Cole Brown (6-5) had a solid showing after he recorded third place at Jim Thorpe.

“Lavonte Bouie is having a good season,” added Russo. “He (Bouie) avenged a loss and Scheirer bounced back from his showing at the Jim Thorpe tournament. Fehr has really put together two tournaments together as he was fourth last week and third this past week.

“Adam Reinhart fought through some adversity, and Cole Brown has had two good weeks in a row. He has been getting some momentum and creating his style.”

The Roughies will have four-straight Colonial League dual meets traveling to Pen Argyl (Jan. 7), home against Palmerton (Jan. 9), and then road matches against Palisades (Jan. 15) and Northern Lehigh (Jan. 17) before the Berwick Duals Jan. 18.

From there, the Roughies will have Northwestern at home tournament (Jan 22) and the always challenging Coal Cracker Tournament (Jan. 24-25) in front of the league and the postseason.

“We have everything in front of us,” stressed Russo. “We just need to keep pushing.”
