STUDENT PROFILE - Italia Gethers, Liberty HS
Grade: 12
Family members: Maria McNamara (mother), Sterling Gethers (father), Alex (little brother), Alyssa (cousin), and Lola, Winnie and Bella (dogs)
Favorite subject: English, history, and government/politics. I love English because I enjoy reading and have a passion for good stories. I love history simply because I find it interesting, plus history teachers are the best. They have to be funny to keep kids awake and engaged and – at least for me, it works! I love government and politics because it’s relevant to everyone.
Activities: I am co-president of Liberty’s Social Justice Club alongside Gabrielle Philips, and I am part of Liberty Theater.
Next steps: I want to become a screenwriter. Currently I am applying to dramatic/screen-writing programs at a couple different universities in New York City and California.
Career goals: I want to write movies and work on TV shows that make people go, “Wow, what the heck did I just watch and why did I love it so much?” I hope to get an internship at HBO because I love the shows they produce. Compared to other networks, HBO pushes boundaries and airs really well-develop, interesting shows.
Heroes: My mom
Hobbies: Obviously I love to read, write and watch movies/TV, but I also love to listen to music, try to play the guitar and go roller skating and ice skating with my friends.
Current job(s): I work at Abercrombie and Fitch in the Lehigh Valley Mall.
Volunteer/community work: I am part of LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society).
Likes: Spicy food, the band The Internet, and $5 movie Tuesdays
Dislikes: Close-minded people and watermelon
Greatest accomplishment (so far): This isn’t something you win an award for, but I think it counts. It’s pretty awesome that at 17, I have found something I am passionate about to “do when I grow up.”
Advice for peers: No matter what anyone may tell you, it’s okay to be the odd one out. Nerds can be cool, lol, so please, don’t pressure yourself to speak, look or act a certain way just because other kids do; there’s a world outside of your school – remember that.
