Weber, Parton lead Falcons past Q-town
Trey Weber and Chad Parton aren’t necessarily two of the top scoring threats for the Salisbury boys’ basketball team. The two combined for just one point in the opening game of the Falcons’ annual holiday tournament-a 46-38 loss to Saucon Valley on Friday night.
But 24 hours later, the duo played a huge role in the Falcons’ second game of the tournament. Weber’s 21 points led all scorers as Salisbury (5-4 overall, 3-2 in Colonial League) defeated Quakertown, 57-33, in the third-place game on Saturday evening. Weber and Parton combined for 32 points in the win.
“It was pretty big coming back after a game that we expected to win against Saucon Valley,” Weber said after making three 3-pointers. “Coming back and winning by over 20 is a good feeling.”
“Patrick [Foley] has been scoring a lot for us, and I think he’s attracting a little bit more defensive attention,” said head coach Jason Weaver. “Trey played really well tonight. He knocked down open shots when it was there. He’s been doing a good job rebounding. I said we’re sort of making a four-man out of him.”
The Falcons struggled shooting in the opener against the Saucon Valley. But those shots started to fall against Quakertown, and it began with Weber and Parton.
Holding a 13-10 lead late in the first quarter, Parton made an immediate impact off the bench during his first time entering the game. He quickly recorded a steal and layup that pushed the Falcons’ lead to five points. Then, just a few moments later, Parton drained a 3-pointer from the wing with under a minute remaining in the opening quarter.
Parton scored the final five points of that opening quarter that put the Falcons in front 18-12, a lead they would never give up.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well [against Saucon Valley], and we’re a team that if we’re not shooting the ball well our whole game plan crumbles,” Weaver said. “There are going to be nights when we’re not making shots, and that’s when our defense has to be better. And we have to make foul shots; we were 9-of-18 from the line [against Saucon Valley]. We were up one going into the fourth quarter.”
Parton’s quick start rolled over into the second quarter against Quakertown. He drilled another 3-pointer at the 4:30 mark to give the Falcons a 25-17 lead. All of Parton’s 10 points came in the first half.
Then it was Weber’s turn. A rebound and putback from the senior forward gave Salisbury its first double-digit lead at 31-20. He closed the half with a 3-pointer and a foul-line jumper that put the hosts ahead 36-23.
“We didn’t play as a team as we could [against Saucon Valley],” Weber said. “We weren’t making all of our shots either.
“I just felt good. My teammates were feeding me with wide open shots, and I was just taking them.”
After a 3-pointer by Quakertown cut its deficit to 10 points, Salisbury went on a 13-0 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Weber hit two 3-pointers and connected on another three-point play during the run. Quinn Warmkessel (who finished with 10 points) recorded two field goals as well.
Salisbury’s led grew to 51-30 after three quarters. Quakertown scored just 10 points in the entire second half on 3-of-20 shooting.
“I thought the defense was great,” Weaver said. “Kenyo [Herrera] started tonight because Joe [Panariello] was sick. I thought he did a great job defensively. We were pressuring the ball, the help was good and we did a good job rebounding.”
Northampton was crowned tournament champion after defeating Saucon Valley, 49-31. Weber, along with Brandon Binn (Saucon Valley), Isaac Harris (Northampton), Zachary Gula (Northampton), Spencer Cole (Northampton) and Matt Catalano (Quakertown) were named to the All-Tournament team. Gula was named MVP.
Monday’s game against Palmerton started a string of tough Colonial League competition for the Falcons. Results were not available at time of press. The Falcons next take on Notre Dame-Green Pond on Friday.
