Bethlehem Garden Club Honoring Betty Bartron

Bethlehem Garden Club hosted its November meeting at Advent Moravian Church, with celebrity guest speaker Jane Godshalk, AIFD, and invited other regional garden clubs to attend. The event brought out approximately 200 gardeners eager to learn from the design expertise of Godshalk, who created seven designs on stage following the looks of “modern mass” and ‘”armature” designs. The arrangements went home with attendees by raffle.

Godshalk was selling her book, “Flower Arranging Secrets,” which focuses on designs for the everyday household. She teaches an extensive floral program at Longwood Gardens throughout the year.

The meeting also had juried exhibitions of designs featuring work of Bethlehem Garden Club members. Categories included “Tray for One,” which featured a holiday-themed place setting with a floral element feature. Another category was illuminary design style named “Glow of the Holidays.” Horticulture was another category that featured clippings from evergreen or other plant medium shown in small vases.

The highlight of the day was the celebration of centenarian Betty Bartron’s birthday. A Bethlehem Garden Club member since 1982, she is still gardening every year. She was honored with a white sweetheart rose corsage and a berry filled cake. Bartron mentioned that this was the last year she canned tomatoes. Turning 100 won’t stop Betty from tending to her gardens, though, where her heirloom rhubarb is a staple.
