A high school concert first

The end of 2019 marked a first for the Northwestern High School Music Department.

It was the first time in six years the high school had a full-time concert band and chorus director.

Before then, Assistant High School Band Director James Lykins, M.Ed. directed both the middle and high school bands.

This year, Lykins enjoyed the performance from the audience section.

The new concert band and chorus director, Allison Kline M. Ed., has nine years experience in band, marching band and choral direction within the Mahanoy Area School District.

Kline directed 23 choir members and 51 concert band members through holiday favorites such as “Believe” (Polar Express, arranged Mac Huff) and “Sleigh Ride” (Leroy Anderson).

“I thought they were great,” Kline said after the performance. “It was a lot of fun to work with these students.”

Also a first, the band and the choir combined their talents to sing and play together, “Our Winter Wonderland,” arranged by Audrey Snyder and Paul Murtha.
