Kavva’s, VegOut, to raise new signs

The Historical and Architectural Review Board granted approval for signage to two businesses at the Dec. 4 hearing.

Representing Kavva’s Polish-European Market, Evan Blose from Fast Signs was granted a certificate of appropriateness to install 40-inch by 19.1-inch vinyl decal store signage at 99 W. Broad St. The black and gold business logo on a bone white background was quickly approved for the outermost panes of the projecting storefront windows that flank the entrance. The applicant was instructed to return if his client, market owner Kacper Waskiewicz, wanted to post hours of operation on the door.

The two-story red brick building is owned by Arthur Schmidt.

Brad Smith scored a COA for 48-inch by 21-inch window signage for his employer Mary Lopresti, owner of VegOut Bethlehem, at 1 E. Church St. The company logo is to be centered in two windows of the newly-opened vegan eatery at the corner of Church and New streets.

The submitted design for the vinyl signage features “VegOut Bethlehem” in sans serif in all uppercase lettering and a small Bethlehem star with black letters and pinstripe outlined in black.

Approval was granted, with the recommendation that the letters would be serif with off-white, not black for better visibility. Chairman Fred Bonsall urged they consider adapting the vegan restaurant’s clever hand-drawn temporary sign featuring a stylized script font into a permanent one. Bonsall said, “The temporary sign looks great,” adding, “Bam! It works!”

Geneive Marcon owns the vintage 3½-story residential over commercial building.

The Historical and Architectural Review Board regularly meets the first Wednesday of every month to review all exterior changes proposed to buildings in the Bethlehem Historic District north of the Lehigh River. When a proposed project receives a certificate of appropriateness from the board, applicants must wait for city council to vote on it before proceeding.
