Girls playing well despite slow start this season
These days, Catasauqua head girls’ basketball coach Mark Seremula understands his team is traveling in some unchartered waters.
Yet, he is confident that they soon will find a steady dock.
Despite dropping a 41-37 decision to East Stroudsburg South and suffering a 33-26 loss to Dieruff in the recent Tamaqua tournament, Seremula sees promise in the near future.
“That was the best game this team has played in the last five years,” said Seremula about the East Stroudsburg South defeat. “They (East Stroudsburg South) gave Tamaqua all it could handle, and Tamaqua made it to states last year.”
Seremula noted that his team had a 36-33 lead over East Stroudsburg South late in the game, but the Cavaliers scored eight of the next nine points down the stretch.
“We haven’t been in that situation before, and we don’t know how to finish,” he added. “We don’t know how to finish. We were in the game against Dieruff and then we went into a scoring slump.
“But us coaches said that on a scale of 0-100, we would give them a 98 on how they played in the tournament. They have a lot more confidence after those two games.”
The Roughies will be led by tri-captains seniors Maddie Hicks and Shaziya Roberts along with junior Lexi Rushatz.
Juniors Olivia Emery and Emma Hawk along with sophomores Aidan Gerhard, Bronwyn Pacchioli, Jhasmine Polanco, Ashley Ritter, and Cora Soltis round out the current rotation.
Seremula has been impressed with the play of Hicks and Roberts in the paint, a key position to the Roughies’ potential success.
“They both played well in the tournament,” said Seremula about the duo. “They held East Stroudsburg South’s center to 15 points and made her work for every point.
“If they can play well in the middle, our guards will get more shots.”
The Roughies had a busy week ahead with a game at Bangor Monday, Salisbury Wednesday, and Palmerton Saturday. Seremula is optimistic that he team can notch a win or two that could further boost their newfound optimism.
“We have Salisbury at home Wednesday and it would be great to pick up a win,” he said. “We have five games in a week, and we’ll see how we compete. We’ll see how long we can stay and work to finish.
“But they were angry with the losses and have gain confidence through both of them. We’re still going to take it one game at a time.”
