Catasauqua wrestlers off to good start

With an impressive recent showing in their own tournament, Catasauqua’s wrestling team has high expectations for the remainder of the season.

Catty finished third overall in the annual Rough Rider Invitational Dec. 7. The Roughies registered 121 points overall behind Maryland’s Stephen Decatur (176.5) and Philadelphia’s Archbishop Ryan (157).

“We’re looking forward to a successful season,” said second-year head coach Joe Russo. “We have a number of wrestlers back who did well last year, and we have a pretty solid lineup at the moment.

“We also have some depth. Our kids should be able to do well individually and we should be in the hunt for district duals.”

Sophomore Jaryn Hartranft, who finished second in districts last season and had an overall 26-9 record with 14 falls, took top spot in the 113-pound bracket. Hartranft missed qualifying for the state tournament by one match last season at 106 pounds.

Jacob Nye, who posted an 11-12 overall record last year, was second in the 106-pound bracket.

Fellow junior Austin Brett was third in the 126-pound class. Brett was second in districts last year at 126 with an overall 22-9 record with 10 falls. Brett was fourth at districts as a freshman.

Freshman Gavin Fehr had a strong opening showing with a third-place finish at 120 pounds. Senior Adam Reinhart was third overall at 182 pounds. Reinhart had a 19-10 mark last year.

Senior heavyweight Lavonte Bouie was second in the tournament. Bouie was 17-11 last season and finished sixth at districts.

“Reinhart and Bouie came on last year and they have been working hard,” added Russo. “Hartranft and Brett should both have very good years. They really came a long way last year.”

The Roughies also notched their first dual meet of the season, as they defeated Southern Lehigh, 36-33, Tuesday night.

Hartranft, Brett, Nye and Reinhart all recorded falls, and Fehr, Ben Langsdorf, and Zach Scheier recorded victories.

Overall the next few weeks, the Roughies have dual meets with Salisbury and Saucon Valley before the Jim Thorpe Tournament in late December and the Whitehall Zephyr Duals in early January.
