School board reorganizes

During the Dec. 3 Catasauqua Area School District Board of Education reorganization meeting, five board members took the oath of office.

Carol Cunningham, Lauren Cieslak, Duane Dietrich, Jillian Emert and Donald Panto affirmed their commitment to performing the duties of their elected offices with fidelity.

Stephen Becker was nominated to fill one of the vacant two-year-term seats on the board. He is expected to take the oath of office at the January meeting. One empty seat on the board remains.

Cunningham was unanimously re-elected to serve as the board’s president. Likewise, Dietrich was re-elected vice president without contest. Panto will once again be the liaison to Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

Among the appointments was the approval of Attorney David Knerr to continue to serve as the district’s solicitor.

“I look forward to another year,” Knerr said.

Following the reorganization meeting, the board held its regular meeting to approve business items.

The board approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of bonds for up to $15 million. These funds will be used for capital projects in the district. Also approved was an agreement for services from D’Huy Engineering for the track and multipurpose synthetic field and site improvement design and construction for the Alumni Field project.

It was approved for the district to sell 15.62 acres of unused lands on the west side of 14th Street to Castle Holdings Inc.

The resignations of Robert Ardle, volunteer assistant girls basketball coach, and Yvette Campbell, noncertified instructional aide, from Catasauqua High School were approved.

James D’Annibale was appointed as an assistant pep band director, and Zachary Bradley was appointed as an assistant wrestling coach - both volunteer positions. Debra Becker was added to the substitute employment list as a custodian substitute.

Two Moravian College students were approved as student teachers effective March 16, 2020, until May 1, 2020, pending the receipt of employment paperwork. Kelly Martin will work with Jennifer Schmidt, and Haliee Flank will work with Kristine Kostura.

It was unanimously voted to approve a resolution not to raise taxes above the state index for the 2020-21 school year.

Cunningham was reappointed to represent the school board on the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute Board of Directors. Cieslak was voted to serve as the alternate on the LCTI board.

The school board’s next meeting is 7 p.m. Jan. 14, 2020, in the district board room of the administration building, 201 N. 14th St.
