Christmas comes to Catasauqua

Catasauqua kicked off the Christmas season with its annual tree-lighting ceremony Dec. 8.

The tree lighting was traditionally held at the George Taylor House, but this year the venue was switched to the new municipal complex, 90 Bridge St. The advantage of the new location is the building provides shelter from the cold.

Before the tree lighting, Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church went to the senior high-rise and sang carols while passing out treats.

Revolution Church was at the event with cookies, hot chocolate and crafts. Mayor Barbara Schlegel added a twist this year with a selection of pine cones for attendees to decorate.

The Catasauqua Fire Department took off around 6 p.m. to pick up Santa Claus, who bounded out of the firetruck to be surrounded by his admirers.

The evergreen planted on the municipal building’s front yard provides a permanent tree for the borough to use.

The Marine Corps Antebellum Band played traditional Christmas tunes while children took their turns sitting with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
