Liberty has a solid mix back

Liberty’s girls’ basketball team is seizing preseason opportunities in preparation for regular season play.

“I thought our summer was very productive,” said Liberty coach Andy Wescoe, who is in his third year with the Hurricanes. “Our energy and enthusiasm was excellent every time we got together. Playing in summer league also allowed us to welcome our new players into the fold which was extremely important and beneficial because it allowed them to build chemistry and get an understanding of how we want to play.”

This past June, the Hurricanes played in the Cedar Beach tournament where they went 2-2. Wescoe said it gave the team the chance to gain valuable experience playing against some competitive, well-coached teams.

This November, the Hurricanes played in the Whitehall Preseason Tournament.

“[It] allowed our players coming off their fall sports seasons to get on the floor and build toward the season,” Wescoe said.

Liberty’s key returners are Kathryn Wescoe (G), Morgan Bokan (G), Erin Eisenhart (F), and Julie Curti (F).

Newcomers include Jessica Farrell (G), Layla Orth (G), and Alondra Cruz (C).

“We have a mix of young and old which is showing to work out very well all summer and in practice. Making sure we spend enough time teaching is a priority,” said Wescoe. “Our defense needs to be a strong point of our team and we continue to build on that each time we get together. I think this year we will be more athletic on the floor than in previous years. In terms of improvement we’ll need to limit turnovers and limit second chance points being one of the smaller teams in the league.”

Liberty will host Saucon Valley on Dec. 6 and William Allen on Dec. 10.
