A little extra holiday spirit was in the air at Bethlehem City Hall Nov. 22. Joyful third graders from Spring Garden ES and Lehigh Valley Dual-Language Charter School gathered to decorate ornaments for the mayor’s tree and take part in holiday festivities.
This beautiful annual event was organized by Beverly Bradley, the president of the Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program.
In addition to participating in making their own ornaments and bookmarks, the students had the chance to rotate through several different stations, such as face painting and book signing. The City of Bethlehem Mounted Police, Just Born and the Health Department all set up booths as well, with enriching activities for the children to enjoy. Students were also provided with lunch from ShopRite, treats, books, backpacks and knitted scarves or headbands. Santa and Mrs. Claus took time to talk with the kids and encourage reading among youth. A vibrant school band also played Christmas songs, which greatly contributed to the jolly atmosphere.
Carol Ann, a volunteer at the event, handed out the knitted accessories to children. She spoke very warmly about Beverly, saying he truly appreciates the work she puts into the event every year. She said, “I’ve known Beverly since forever; we went to Washington School together so I’ve known her since elementary school, and she is a wonderful person and she does this every year for the kids.” The third- graders look forward to this day every year; it is always sure to be memorable.
