Off to the races, Oktoberfest style

A highlight of the Steelstacks Oktoberfest is the annual Weiner Dog Race. Four sessions of races were held, Oct. 5, 6, 12 and 13, in a small area in front of Steel Stacks. To compete in the races, dogs had to be Dachshunds or Dachshund crossbreeds. Competing dogs ranged in age from puppies to seniors. Each race began with a parade. Dogs not competing in the races were welcome to participate in the parade, though they could not receive prizes. At the end of each parade, dogs returned to the area and were paraded one by one before the judges. A king and queen were chosen, and each day three more Judges’ Choice prizes were awarded. The dogs raced two at a time. Winning dogs were assigned to the winners bracket, and losing dogs to the losers bracket. The top loser was moved into the winners bracket. The Winners races were the last races each afternoon. On the final Sunday, an additional free for all Fun Run dog race preceded the regular races.
