Volleyball team made progress this season

First-year head girls’ volleyball coach Jordan DeMasi is being patient.

Yet, DeMasi knows she has to stay the course. Wins and losses won’t truly measure the progress of the team this past season.

“It definitely will take time,” said DeMasi. “But everything has been positive. Most of our girls haven’t played before. They are still figuring things out.

“You can see that they are improving with experience and that’s all we can ask for.”

DeMasi has seen cohesion developing along the way.

“We all know there is a plan,” she said. “Every girl has a role, and each of them has been sticking to their role. That will eventually help change the environment.”

DeMasi looked to seniors Jayden Faustner, Katie Verenna, Alyssa Lee, Rachel Rodriguez, Tory Simmons, Lexi Simpson to continue to anchor the team and set the stage.

“They definitely have a done a great job,” said DeMasi. “They have provided a lot of leadership and have pulled everyone together.

“They have showed the rest of the girls how to play the game and have formed a solid chemistry. They all have done a fantastic job.”

DeMasi sees a ripple effect from her seniors’ contributions.

“We have juniors with some experience, but they are still learning,” she said. “You can see progress through how they react to game situations. They are all starting to react better and understand.

“That’s nice to see.”

DeMasi liked her team’s enthusiasm and work ethic, and she expects it to continue through the summer.

“I definitely will have some girls playing for the summer,” she said. “We are starting to attract interest among the younger girls in the school and the ones in middle school.

“We’ll have open gyms and play in the Catasauqua summer league. We’ll also get our share of workouts when we can. I know girls are playing other sports, but I believe we can continue to grow the program.”
