Jaindl runs to fourth place at NCAA Regional
Several former Emmaus High School athletes competed on college teams during the fall season. Here’s a look at some of them.
Moravian College senior Greg Jaindl will compete in this weekend’s NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Kentucky. Jaindl qualified for nationals by placing fourth in the Mideast Regional 8,000-meter run in 24:48.8, tied for the best finish at regionals in program history. He came in second place at the Landmark Conference Championship 8,000-meter run in 26:23.43 and was named an All-Conference First Team selection.
Iowa sophomore Leah Zellner played a major role in the Hawkeye’s 2019 season that included a Big Ten Championship over Northwestern. Iowa’s season came to an end in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships via a 2-1 loss to UNC. Zeller, the former Hornet, scored one of Iowa’s three goals over Duke in the Sweet Sixteen victory. She finished with seven goals and two assists in 17 games (10 starts).
Abby Dalton, a sophomore running on Muhlenberg’s cross country team, had another successful season this past fall. She finished her season with an impressive 38th-place showing at NCAA Mideast Regional in 22:47.7. A Centennial Conference Second-Team selection, Dalton placed 13th at the conference meet in early November in a time of 23:04.9.
Boston College junior midfielder Maddy Dorn started in 15 of the Eagles’ 22 games this past field hockey season. Boston College (15-7 overall, 4-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference) advanced to the ACC championship game before coming up short against UNC, 3-1. The Eagles will get their chance at revenge in the NCAA semifinals round on Friday when they take on the Tar Heels once again after Boston College defeated Northwestern and Louisville in the first two rounds.
Temple junior Cristina Carotenuto was the Owls’ main field hockey goalkeeper this past fall. She started in 16 of the team’s 17 games, recoding 1,030 minutes in net, 70 saves and a 72.9 save percentage. Carotenuto recorded four shutouts for the Owls.
Catholic University senior Carly Philbin started in all 20 games this past season for the school’s field hockey team as a defender. She recorded an assist against Notre Dame (Maryland) late in the season and ends her career with the Cardinals with two goals scored. She played in 65 career games (along with 48 starts) and was named to the Landmark Conference Second-Team this season.
Eric Miller, a redshirt junior on the Kutztown football team, played in nine games at defensive tackle this past season. He recorded 28 total tackles, along with 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks for the Golden Bears. For his career, Miller has accumulated 63 total tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss.
Junior midfielder Kacper Grycel started 17 games for the Bloomsburg men’s soccer team this past fall, posting a goal and adding two assists for the Huskies. He finished with 13 shots on goal-second most on the team.
Kutztown University freshman Maddie Fey played in 11 games for the Golden Bears this fall. The forward/midfielder recorded three shots in her first college season.
Emily Ingalls, a sophomore midfielder on the West Chester field hockey team, has been an integral part of the Rams’ historic season. She has started in all but one game for the Rams as they take on Kutztown in the NCAA Division II semifinals on Friday afternoon. West Chester had won its first 18 games of the season before Kutztown defeated the Rams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinals round. Ingalls has logged 932 minutes of field time this season.
Muhlenberg junior Morgan Tietz had a strong end to the season for the Muhlenberg field hockey team. The former Hornet scored three goals over the final three games. She finished with four goals scored and five assists, including two against Montclair State.
Drew Schwindenhammer, a redshirt sophomore on the Millersville football team, saw action in six games this past season. He finished with four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, with the score coming against Shepherd.
Dartmouth junior forward Kira Koehler has been a steady player off the bench for the Big Green this past season. She saw action in all but one of the team’s games and finished with six shots. She logged 175 minutes on the field.
