PET INNOVATION CHALLENGE

The Factory in the arts district of South Bethlehem hosted a Pet Innovation Challenge Oct. 2 and 3. One hundred innovative pet companies had applied. Ten were selected to compete. Each was allotted a short timed period to present their product. Audience members were able to ask questions at the end of each presentation.

The event began with a evening reception Oct. 2, during which guests could enjoy food prepared in the Factory’s test kitchen, and browse displays for all ten contestants, and meet them.

Company presentations began with introductions by Bethlehem Mayor Robert Donchez, who spoke of the Factory’s investment in the city, as well as other successful medical centers, universities, and festivals, and how they have improved the quality of life in the city. He also spoke about the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, and its programs involving the public in its work socializing and finding homes for pets. Factory founder and managing partner Richard Thompson spoke of the Factory’s work and investment in the city, and the companies it has invested in.

The 10 Pitch Slam competitors included Animal Biome, whose experience with an unhealthy shelter dog led to microbiome testing and the development of supplements for health and wellness; Because Animals, a biotechnology company that makes pet food with cultured meat; Chippin, which produces treats made from sustainable proteins; Hachi Tami, makers of a smart cat litter box that helps early detection of chronic kidney disease; Jiminy’s, which makes dog food and treats made from insect protein; Maranda, which provides veterinary-approved lab tests from home; Mella Petcare, producer of an axillary thermometer that takes non-rectal temperature readings and can also analyze body fat; Obe, developers of a patented Petelligence app that uses smart technology for personalized dog wellness; Primal Health, makers of a patented, clinically-proven drinkable dental prebiotic, Shameless Pets, providers of a different way to enable concerned pet owners to do their part for the planet; and Teef, maker of Teef water which stops bad breath in dogs, and grows “good plaque.”

Pitch Slam winner Shameless Pets received a cash prize, six months of entrepreneur services from the Factory, plus a free booth at Natural Products Expo East 2020.

The second part of the competition, the Innovation Challenge, took place Oct. 3. Dr. Katy Nelson, veterinarian and host and executive producer of “The Pet Show with Dr. Katy,” gave the keynote address, discussing the state of the pet industry, and her work with various pet-related companies from Fortune 500 corporations to pet start-ups. The address was followed by a discussion and brainstorming session. The winners of the Innovation challenge were Teef, first place; Because Animals. first runner-up; and Chippin, second runner-up.
