Catasauqua volunteers are recognized
With five council seats up for election the following night, the Nov. 4 Catasauqua Borough Council meeting was brief with intermingled friendly ribbing and banter.
Mayor Barbara Schlegel, with countenance from borough council President Vincent Smith, kicked off the meeting with a flurry of accolades.
Schlegel presented an award recognizing Cub Pack 94 for its assistance with the summer concerts, held outdoors Friday nights. The Scouts raised nearly $1,000 during the season.
The Catasauqua Borough Fire Police was recognized by Schlegel for its recent $1,000 donation to the police department’s K-9 unit.
Numerous volunteers of all ages for the historic George Taylor House were on hand to receive certificates of merit for their efforts to improve the historic property.
“There are about 20 volunteers helping at the Taylor House property,” Schlegel said.
The mayor ended her report by swearing in a second junior council member, Luis Saint-Amand. Saint-Amand is a Catasauqua High School senior.
In his report, Saint-Amand talked of the CHS Homecoming dance, scheduled to take place Nov. 9.
Council passed a resolution requesting that Pennsylvania Department of Transportation award a grant of about $564,000 for the Catasauqua Iron Works streetscape project. The funds will be used for streets and sidewalks at the Iron Works site.
Council also voted unanimously to approve two ordinances. One would allow for the installation of a stop sign at Middle Street eastbound at Crane Street. The other ordinance increases the parking fine for blocking a fire hydrant to $50, plus costs.
Schlegel noted she wants to make the public aware she is not the liaison from council to the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority. The liaisons are Smith and borough Manager Steve Travers.
There are a number of vacancies on borough committees - civil service, planning, shade tree and borough authority. Those interested should contact the borough office.
Catasauqua Borough Council meets again 7 p.m. Nov. 25 at the municipal complex, 90 Bridge St.
