Cox earns medal at state championships

Emmaus golfer Michelle Cox earned a state medal last week. The junior shot 5-over par for 36 holes at the two-day PIAA state championship tournament to finish fourth in the Class 3A girls field.

Cox, an three-time East Penn Conference champ and the 2019 District 11 girls champ, shot 75 in the first round and 74 the second day of competition at Heritage Hills Golf Course in York. She played in the No. 1 spot for Emmaus this season and finished the year with three postseason medal.

Cox improved in her finish at states last year when she was 12th overall.

Hornet teammate Matt Zerfass also competed at states. The sophomore shot 77 each day for a 154 total (12-over par) and a 17th-place finish.

Zerfass, who had a great postseason run that included tying for first place at the district qualifier, taking second place in the District 11 championship, winning the Lehigh Valley Ameatuer Junior Division, earning a trip to states and shooting a pair of rounds in the 70s on the biggest state Pennsylavnia high school golf has to offer.

Emmaus went undefeated as a team in 2019 and will likely have most of its line up back next season, including Cox and Zerfass.
