Over the past few weeks, Catasauqua head girls’ soccer coach Chris Hain spent more time trying to comprise a healthy lineup rather than evaluating his district playoff chances.

Fortunately for him and his players, both problems were solved in their favor.

The fifth-seeded Rough Riders (7-11-1) won an opening-round district playoff game for the second-consecutive year when they blanked fourth-seeded and host Schuylkill Haven (9-9-1), 2-0, Tuesday afternoon.

They will meet top-seeded Moravian Academy (14-3) in a district semifinal Monday at a site yet to be determined. The Roughies lost a hard-fought, 1-0 decision to them in the same round last year.

But it is about celebrating the moment, especially after a regular season of bumps and bruises.

Kaylee Weidaw scored with an assist from Haleigh Toto, and Sydney Gebhardt also tallied with help from Aidan Gerhard.

Maddie Hicks registered 14 saves

“This was big,” boasted Hain. “Any win in districts to keep playing is big. We also were able to get Maddy Warren back after missing half the year with a concussion.

“We never played them before, and we really didn’t have anything on them. We had a good day defensively.”

The Roughies originally were scheduled to play Thursday, but the game was bumped up to Tuesday. It initially seemed like a good situation to get some rest and practices.

“We thought we would have a few days off to help us get back,” said Hain. “We just have dealt with so many injuries this year, and we have been searching for a consistent lineup.

“But we knew we just had to go out and play and find out how good we could be.”

Catty rebounded in a similar situation last year when they again battled injuries, and were met third-seed Tri-Valley in their district opener. The Roughies responded with a 3-2 win after they trailed 2-0.

“We were down, but we never quit,” said Hain. “They had another great effort this year, and you never know how things will turn out.

Hain has been impressed with the steady effort of Hicks, who is on target for another banner year. She was a first-team league choice last year.

“She’s played all year expect for about 15 minutes when she nicked her hand,” said Hain. “She has been there for us all year, and she gives us everything she has.”

Hicks is optimistic that the rematch with Moravian will be another tight one.

“We just have to go out and play,” added Hain. “Our girls have shown that they can step up to the occasion.”
