Borough, PennDOT reach agreement

Northampton Borough is preparing for winter’s arrival and its impact on roads, as well as more immediate events that will take place, such as trick-or-treat night.

An agreement was reached between Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Northampton that has the borough’s public works department personnel removing snow and ice from state roads in the borough, such as Route 329 (21st Street), Cherryville Road and upper Main Street.

The five-year pact, called a service charge, has PennDOT reimbursing the borough approximately $4,400 each year, starting with the 2019-20 winter.

The borough has placed its lighted Halloween decorations on lamp posts on Main Street. The decorations were made by public works personnel several years ago.

Keeping with tradition, the borough has set Oct. 31 as trick-or-treat night between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Residents are urged to turn on their porch lights to welcome the children.

“A search has begun for a suitable Christmas tree,” Northampton Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said. “This process becomes more difficult each year.”

The tree serves as the community’s holiday tree at Main Street and Laubach Avenue. Annually, the tree is donated by a family wanting to make such a gift to the borough.

The borough dispatches its personnel to cut down the evergreen tree with its equipment and transport it to the site, where a program of caroling, official tree lighting and Santa’s arrival is held.
