Fest O’ Fall

Keep an eye out around the borough for Catasauqua’s iconic scarecrows. Members of Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association have been busy putting them up in preparation for Catasauqua’s annual Fest O’ Fall.

“We have about a hundred that we put together from all the past Fest O’ Fall events,” Betsy Hillenbrand, HCPA president, said.

The festival is scheduled for noon-5 p.m. Oct. 5. The rain date is Oct. 6.

The event, sponsored by HCPA, takes place at both the Biery House, 8 Race St., and the George Taylor House, Lehigh and Poplar streets.

Some of the activities planned for the Biery House include face painting, hay rides, an obstacle course, Nerf gun range, pinatas and environmental demonstrations. Crafts include mural and pumpkin painting, sunglass masks, Halloween headbands and a make-your-own-scarecrow station.

The Biery House Pub will be open. You can also purchase prints and see the new displays at the Biery House Art Gallery and Museum.

There will be Revolutionary War re-enactors, militia demonstrations and more at the George Taylor House.

Little Green Shack will perform on the lawn, and Tom Yurasits will perform a magic show. There will also be pony rides, arts and crafts, vendors and crafters and more.

Every year, Hillenbrand drafts a few of her contemporaries to add a few new scarecrows to the collection and repair some of the popular ones. This year, Shelly Nolter, Deb Mellish and Linda Gotzon joined in.

The first order of business was to repair the Catasauqua Sam scarecrow, which sits near the football stadium.

“We see pictures of him and students all over Facebook,” Nolter said.

All that exposure means maintenance. This year, the athletic body was replaced with a full wire setup and new socks.

“You can’t just stuff these things with paper,” Nolter said. “They need to be weather-proof; they are going to be out there for a while.”

There is a scarecrow workstation at the Biery House during Fest O’ Fall, where families can build their own scarecrow, but those get taken home.

“We provide the materials and a little advice on how to get a good one,” Hillenbrand said.
