Catasauqua mayor says HCPA needs more funding
During the Sept. 30 Catasauqua Borough Council workshop meeting, Councilwoman Jessica Kroope reported the Fest O’ Fall fundraising event Oct. 5 at the George Taylor House and the Biery House includes a Revolutionary War re-enactment, music, pony rides, food and a magic show.
The event is sponsored by Historical Catasauqua Preservation Association. All funds raised go to the George Taylor House for its needs.
Catasauqua Mayor Barbara Schlegel, commenting on the repairs needed at George Taylor House, said, “We can’t wait for grants. [HCPA] needs money. [George Taylor House] is a national landmark, and nothing is being done. We have to step up and get money for it,” Schlegel said.
In other news, Cameron Smith reported he attended a Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority board meeting to request that Catasauqua be given a greater voice in Lehigh Valley International Airport’s master plan. No action was taken by the LNAA board.
Bobby Searfass, a Catasauqua Fire Department firefighter with 59 years of service, was recognized for his longevity and commitment to the community and for his work taking care of the Fireman’s Cart housed in the Catasauqua Municipal Complex.
Schlegel announced the annual Halloween parade is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 16 and will take its usual route, despite the roadwork occurring on Race Street. The borough’s trick-or-treat night is 6-8 p.m. Oct. 31.
In an outreach to the driving public, it was announced the fine for parking in front of a fire hydrant has been increased from $30 to $50.
Solicitor Jeff Dimmich reported the borough police union is requesting a meeting with the solicitor to discuss the school resource officer and police body cameras.
Councilwoman Debra Mellish reported the regulations regarding street-placed dumpsters have been completed. A dumpster can be on a street for a maximum of 90 days. When a permit is received, it is for 30 days; it auto-renews every 30 days.
Councilman Brian Bartholomew asked who is keeping track of the lengths of the permits. Borough Manager Steve Travers said the borough office keeps that data.
Also at the meeting, Bartholomew reported the street paving plan for select streets and alleys has been submitted. He then made an impassioned statement of support for the public works crew.
“We are holding our own on streets. Public works and the borough are doing their jobs,” Bartholomew said.
Bartholomew added if anyone complains about streets, he should be the person to contact.
Because of the contested council election Nov. 5, Catasauqua Club, 226 Pine St., is holding a meet the candidates event 7 p.m. Oct. 8.
The next council meeting will be 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the municipal complex, 90 Bridge St.
