Roughie field hockey making progress

Second-year head coach Emily Marley isn’t judging her team’s progress simply on record alone.

It is truly about a process.

The Roughies were 0-10 through their first 10 games, and they had an 0-18 final record last season. They also have scored in just two games in the process.

“Our record doesn’t reflect how we’re playing,” said Marley. “We have been right in games and we’re playing well.

“Our biggest issue is putting the ball in the net. We have been a very defensive team.”

Marley also has been appreciative of her team’s work ethic.

“Last year we had a lot of upperclassmen contributing,” she said. “This year, every girl is. It is not just a few girls.

“We just haven’t been offensive enough.”

Marley related the team’s scoring woes to experience.

“We have a lack of experience,” she said. “We have a lot of young players. We’re still learning how to play.

“But we don’t want to use that as an excuse. We have played 10 games and we should know how to respond. Our league is tough and our girls are playing against mostly juniors and seniors.”

Sophomores Katie Parks and Penny Broadman both have seen time in the nets. Parks had 69 saves and Broadman had 44.

“We have over 100 saves already,” said Marley. “Most teams may have around 70 for a season.

Both girls have done a good job and they’re getting better.”

Juniors Lexi Rushatz and Annabelle Cline have paced the offensive attack with their determination.

“Lexi (Rushatz) just never gets tired,” said Marley. “She is a driving force and just keep playing. Annabelle (Cline) is the same way. She never needs a break.

“Both of them can do it all.”

Sophomore Juliza Rodriguez has been a defensive presence.

“She (Rodriguez) has been doing a nice job for us,” said Marley. “We have been seeing our girls gaining more confidence on defense.”

Marley sees her team gaining more traction if they can find the net.
