Moore Township farmland preservation efforts are a success
Northampton County is planning a celebration Oct. 9 recognizing the 200th farm preserved in the county. The 200th farm is the Schiavone Farm, Moore Township.
In an active role, Moore Township Board of Supervisors and the township’s Land and Environmental Protection Board continue the push to preserve farmland in the township. Dozens of additional acres of farmland are in the queue for future preservation.
Moore Township figures prominently in the 200th farm celebration because of its remarkable, continued farm preservation success, it was mentioned during the Sept. 17 supervisors meeting.
Three elements that fuel this push in Moore Township are a genuine desire to preserve family farms, a community desire to maintain the township’s picturesque rural character and to push back against the warehouse development spreading across rural Lehigh Valley areas, it was noted.
The LEPB is gaining a reputation as a successful group. North Whitehall Township is seeking advice from the Moore LEPB for guidance to assist farmland preservation in North Whitehall.
In other business at the Sept. 17 meeting, borough Manager Nick Steiner said he expects the township will receive a $1,000 grant from the Susquehanna Municipal Trust Grant to purchase AEDs for employee safety.
Steiner also reported an apparent error in an entry in the pension system risk assessment about two years ago was discovered in a state audit. Moore will have to reimburse the system $9,176, plus interest.
Police Chief Gary West was without a police report due to a police secretary departure, he reported. West said the reports are being worked on and will be submitted as soon as possible.
The fire department received 30 calls with four fires and responded to eight motor vehicle accidents during the month of August. The ambulance crew had 60 calls.
Solicitor David Backenstoe was asked to develop an amendment to the zoning ordinance as it relates to mobile home parks.
In another important matter, the supervisors voted unanimously to hold the Moore Township trick or treat 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 31.
The next Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting is 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at the municipal building, 2491 Community Drive.
