Coplay crawl a hit

To help celebrate the borough’s 150th anniversary, Coplay put on a pub crawl Sept. 21 as an end-of-summer event. “Crawlers” moved from one location to another.

“We had a good turnout for the event,” said Councilman Stephen Burker, who coordinated the effort. “It was successful enough that we plan on keeping it for next year, too.”

Participants paid a $10 entry fee that entitled them to special drink pricing, food and prizes at specially noted restaurants and bars.

“What we wanted to do was start on Saturday afternoon when the places are usually not busy,” Burker said. “The pub crawl would bring some business into the businesses.”

The crawl started at Samuel Owens Restaurant and Bar, 128 Chestnut St.; moved to the 2nd Street Tavern, 33 N. Second St.; then to American Club of Coplay, 32 N. Third St.; and ended at Coplay Saengerbund, 205 S. Fifth St.

The journey was compact enough so that no one had to drive from one tavern to another.

At each bar, participants received a playing card to go toward a poker hand. The better the hand, the better the prize. Prizes, other than the special grand prize, included special T-shirts.

Three aces took the grand prize.

The only objectors were those who came in to watch college football.

“Usually, there are only five people in here,” noted one bar patron not taking part in the crawl. “Now, it’s so crowded I can’t hear the game.”
