Charles R. Hills Sr., 94, of Allentown and formerly of Northampton and Maryland, died Sept. 17, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospice House, Bethlehem. He was the husband of the late Ann M. (Wescoe) Hills.
Born in Catskill, N.Y., he was a son of the late Mark H. Sr. and Carolyn (Clapper) Hills.
He was a 1942 graduate of Liberty High School, Bethlehem. He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Lehigh University in 1948.
He was a B-17 navigator in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He was an engineer for Westinghouse in Maryland for 40 years before retiring in 1991. Before that, he worked in the same capacity for the federal government for five years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Northampton, where he was a deacon on consistory. He was on the finance committee for many years at Milford Mill Church, Maryland.
He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He was a member of the Lehigh Valley IWSA group.
He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn A. and her husband Everett Purkins of Carlisle; a brother, Mark H. Jr. and his wife Judith of Coplay; three grandsons, Matthew and Timothy Purkins and Jason Hills; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by son, Charles R. Jr.; and a sister, Dolores Gaver.
