Charles R. Hills Sr., 94, of Allentown and formerly of Northampton and Maryland, died Sept. 17, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospice House, Bethlehem. Born in Catskill, New York, he was a son of the late Mark H. Hills Sr. and the late Carolyn (Clapper) Hills. He was the husband of the late Ann M. (Wescoe) Hills.
He was a 1942 graduate of Liberty HS, Bethlehem. He earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Lehigh University in 1948.
He was a B-17 navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was an engineer for Westinghouse in Maryland for 40 years before retiring in 1991. Prior to that, he worked in the same capacity for the Federal government for five years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s U.C.C. Church, Northampton, where he was a deacon on consistory.
He organized the 1996-2000 high school reunions in Lakewood, Florida. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He was a member of the Milford Mill Church, Maryland, finance committee for many years. He was a member of the Lehigh Valley I.W.S.A. (I was shot at) group.
He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn A. Purkins and her husband Everett of Carlisle; a brother, Mark H. Hills, Jr. and his wife Judith of Coplay; three grandsons, Matthew and Timothy Purkins and Jason Hills; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by son, Charles R. Hills Jr.; and a sister, Dolores Gaver.
