Hicks continues to shine in goal for Roughies

Last season, Catasauqua’s Maddie Hicks was named as the Colonial League first team goalkeeper, as he has a banner year with 178 saves.

However, she admittedly wasn’t expecting it.

“My coach pulled me aside to tell me,” said Hicks. “I didn’t have any clue that I would be mentioned. I was so surprised, and I didn’t expect it at all.

“It felt really great being recognized by other players and coaches for what I was able to do for the team. I definitely hope I can continue to do it this year.”

So far, she has.

Through the team’s first four games, Hicks has been busy in the nets as she already has recorded 72 saves and allowed six goals. In the process, the Roughies got off to a 3-1 start.

“Maddie (Hicks) is having another great year,” said Roughies’ head coach Chris Hain. “She is playing extremely well and is very focused.

“She is going to have another great season ahead and sets the tone for this team.”

Hicks and her teammates are playing with plenty of incentive from their season-ending, 1-0 loss to Moravian Academy in the district semifinals last season.

“I worked very hard in the offseason after last year’s loss,” said the senior. “I have been training and practicing my hardest. I don’t want to forget about it and I won’t settle for less.

“This is my last year, and I know I have to stay positive. I have to prepare myself to be at my best in the tight games.”

Even though she started playing soccer in the Catty Youth Athletic Association at a young age, Hicks wasn’t always a goalie. She began he career as a striker until an opportunity arose when she was 10-years-old.

“The girls on our team who was the goalie didn’t want to be it anymore,” recalled Hicks. “I volunteered and I have loved it ever since.

“I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

Hicks also sees a tight bond within her team.

“We have a great chemistry and we are all in the right mindset,” said Hicks. “We all know we can make one more big push this season.

“We have a lot of confidence right now, and we can keep each other up.”

After high school, Hicks plans to enroll in Lehigh County Community College, and the soccer coaches there have contacted her about possibly playing.

From there, she plans to transfer to pursue a teaching career.

Parents Dennis and Erica, along with younger sister Olivia, have provided encouragement and support throughout the years.

“My dad has helped coach me over the year and my mom always got me to all of my games,” said Hicks. “My younger sister and I always push each other. My family has been a big part of my career.”

Hicks entertains the thought of possibly playing pro soccer someday, but she’ll likely continue to play like a pro in the nets for the Roughies.
