Workers from Witt’s Tree Service, Catasauqua, brought their sky hook crane to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 417 Howertown Road, Catasauqua, last week to remove the classic bell from the church’s belfry and to remove the golden cross atop the steeple.
One might expect bats, but the belfry housed bees and wasps. With the grate removed, workmen carefully removed the bell and its wooden holder.
The cross removal is scheduled for another day. Bees and hornets were too numerous around the site.
The bell was transported to Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua, where church council will determine how it will handle the historical item.
Neither church actually uses a brass bell; all the chimes are electronic.
