Anyone needing luggage, dishes, pots and pans, furniture, mirrors, vases, etc., would have found all of these donated items and more in good condition at the Knights of Columbus’s fifth annual sale Aug. 17, on the front lawn of St. Anne’s convent.

Founded in 1882, the Knights is the largest Catholic Men’s Fraternal Organization in the world. The sale is the local Knights’ biggest fundraiser of the year. Among this year’s major beneficiaries are the Cay Galgon Life House for unwed mothers-to-be in need of support, Coats for Kids, Special Olympics, Mercy School for Special Learning, and scholarships for seminarians.

For those who enjoy sports, there were basketballs, cycling helmets, golf clubs and roller blades, as well as other sports equipment. Children who visited found toys to ride on, puzzles, games and books. Visitors looking for a painting to decorate a bare wall had many to choose from. In short, everything from Christmas ornaments to baseball cards was on sale.

In addition to St. Anne’s parishioners, attendees included people who happened to be driving by on Washington Avenue and stopped to shop. If the number of customers at the sale or the number and variety of items available to buy are any measure, the sale was a great success.

This year there was a bonus. After shopping, customers could pull into the school yard next to the sale and have their cars washed. The car washers were Boy Scouts and leaders from Troop 306, which is based at St. Anne’s, who did a very thorough job on the cars to raise money for their troop.
